I cannot put into words how grateful I am for Palace Law—especially Chelsi and Patrick Palace. After being referred by John Bonin, another outstanding attorney, I finally found a team who truly listens, cares, and fights for their clients. Palace Law has been nothing short of a lifesaver for me, my wife, and our entire family. I fully qualify for the maximum award of permanent partial disability (PPD) - and I am at the highest levels/categories of disability. All of my back and neck injuries and issues have progressively gotten worse and worse. Before finding Palace Law, I endured a nightmare of mistreatment and injustice while working at a major Seattle-area shipyard as a union machinist. My story is one of relentless hardship: I suffered a devastating, progressive occupational disease after months of brutal, repetitive, and unsafe work—work that was riddled with OSHA violations and toxic exposures. Instead of protecting me, my employer and union failed me at every turn. I was harassed, retaliated against, discriminated against, and ultimately terminated unlawfully. My health insurance was cut off when I needed it most, leaving me buried in tens of thousands of dollars in medical debt and unable to access critical medications for my many work-related injuries and health conditions. I have been denied hundreds of hours of overtime, PTO, sick leave, and vacation pay. My pension and 401(k) contributions—supposed to be 100% matched by both my employer and union—were taken from me. I was denied my $5,000 tool allowance, blocked from union support, and shut out of emergency cash assistance and hardship grants that I should have received as a machinist union member. My L&I claim was deliberately misfiled as a single injury instead of the occupational disease it truly is, and the claims process was made even worse by unhelpful, incompetent claims managers who seemed intent on suppressing my rights rather than upholding them. Because of all this, I am now fully disabled at just 31 years old. I can’t even bend over to put on my own socks. I went from being a McDonald’s All-American and Division I athlete, with a stack of Division II scholarships for basketball and football, to someone who can’t hike, fish, bike, paddleboard, boat, snowmobile, run, or even work out. My wife and I have lost the active, joyful life we built together. I’ve lost my hearing, my vision is failing, my memory is slipping, and I live with constant pain and exhaustion. And through it all, my employer and union have tried to silence me, meeting behind closed doors and hoping I would just go away. But Palace Law would not let that happen. Chelsi has been a true advocate—responsive, knowledgeable, compassionate, and relentless. She listens, she cares, and she stands up for me every single time. Emily at PalaceLaw was assigned to my case in February 2024. I had 2 claims: a sideswipe in December causing whiplash, and the transit bus air seat broke while driving down the highway in mid-January, causing severe injury to my lower back. Fighting with L&I because they linked the 2 claims together. My case has been an actual nightmare. My now former employer is still appealing each step possible to postpone treatments and workers' compensation pay. If it wasn't for Emily, I would have lost my home to foreclosure and my vehicle repossessed. It's not been easy for me. But I'm blessed she has never given up and keeps fighting for me. They have been entirely helpful since they accepted my case. Thorough and informative every step of the way. When I had an IME and no gas in my car, they arranged for a ride to and from. After fighting tooth and nail myself with little to no results, Palace Law stepped in, and immediately Sedgwick stopped dragging me through the mud. Aria Rolfes from Palace Law is absolutely incredible! I am continually impressed with her ability to track my current state of recovery, navigate the difficult waters of LNI, and successfully neutralize extremely complicated obstacles that LNI creates. Her communication skills are unparalleled to the point where it feels as if I’m her only client, even though that is not the case. Having her on my team is the single best decision that I made to ensure that LNI does not take advantage of me. Just last week, after months of diligently arguing over an ankle surgery, she successfully persuaded them to approve it. Without her, this surgery would never be possible because LNI repeatedly denied it and wouldn't accept responsibility for conditions that should be covered. No matter how smart or resourceful you might be, you simply don't have the experience or knowledge to successfully fight LNI on your own. Without Aria, my case would have closed three months in when LNI tried to tell me I was at maximum medical improvement. After retaining Palace Law, all of the letters and threats from LNI stopped. Everything they sent went straight to Aria, which greatly reduced my stress and anxiety. She kept my claim open, and it is still open after seven years while I have had six surgeries to date, with four more surgeries planned. If I listened to LNI, my case would have been closed after three months and I wouldn't have received seven years of care. There are times in life when a person or group of people stand in the rarified air of being exactly who they say that they are. The people of Palace Law breathe that air—the air of professionalism, diligence, compassion, persistence, and dedication to serving the principle of right over wrong. For my wife and I, having Palace Law work for us has been not only rewarding in terms of outcome but a time of reinvigorating altruism—reaffirming a belief in the legal profession. This may sound trite, but the people at Palace Law truly care about their clients and go beyond the extra mile because they are people of integrity. My wife was teaching at a university in Beijing for three weeks in January 2020. She returned to the US coughing up blood and was deemed to be the second case of COVID in California. She was hospitalized immediately and placed in infectious disease isolation, eventually losing half of her left lung. We had no choice of hospitals during this initial period of the COVID pandemic, and our medical insurance would not cover her treatment. Our bills exceeded $100,000. We had to sell our home to pay our medical bills. Her employer, a university, had agreed that her case was covered under its Workers' Compensation plan, but the State of Washington, which administered the plan, disagreed. We sought legal assistance, and Palace Law was recommended by several sources. Palace helped us arrange and advised us through mediation, which resulted in the State agreeing to reimburse most of the medical bills. However, the State dragged the reimbursement process out for another two years. Throughout that time, Chelsi Russell at Palace navigated the bureaucratic waters for us, never wavering, always persistent, positive, kind, and genuinely empathetic. Without her singular efforts, we would not have ultimately prevailed.
